






The School District of Philadelphia hired SALT to develop a Schoolyard Master Plan for Fanny Jackson Coppin School in the Passyunk Square neighborhood. This K-8 school features an unusually narrow schoolyard with very few amenities. Through a collaborative and inclusive planning process with Coppin parents and staff, SALT created a “Play Platter” design concept. This innovative approach addressed key challenges in the schoolyard, including limited play options, inadequate socialization spaces, restricted circulation, and safety concerns. The proposed design creates a flexible, open schoolyard landscape that offers a variety of play elements for students to enjoy. The proposed schoolyard features a compact climbing structure, basketball tree, hammock nets, and a small stage with integrated seating area. Angular plant beds border the site along the eastern wall, providing shade, seasonal appeal, and vital pollinator habitat. Planting was strategically added to screen utilities in the Northeast corner of the site. Long, linear benches frame the edges of the plant beds, creating places for gathering, outdoor learning and socializing.
