Rowan University commissioned SALT DESIGN STUDIO and Edgewater Design to transform an obsolete green into a versatile central quad that efficiently manages stormwater and provides a much-needed gathering place for students campus-wide. As part of a long-term campus master plan, Robinson Green serves as a model for future sustainable development and educating students about the ecological value of their campus environment.
The project layered many objectives into a multi-functional site design. Vehicular traffic was removed from half of Robinson Circle, creating a central campus quad focused on the pedestrian experience. Pathways were designed to create pockets of native habitat that offers food and nesting sites. These pockets also address site runoff through rain gardens and swales that capture water and encourage infiltration.
A series of plazas were paved with reclaimed concrete from existing pathways and laid in gravel for stormwater percolation. Additional site paving and all plant materials were sourced locally, decreasing transportation costs. All excess soil from grading was reused on site, avoiding disposal or storage costs.
