Rowan University commissioned SALT DESIGN STUDIO to design the second phase of their award-winning project, Crossroads at Robinson Green. Focused on performance, gathering and connection, Phase 2 of this project transforms Wilson Hall and the College of Performing Arts with two new outdoor amphitheaters, lush native landscapes and a host of amenities. New pedestrian circulation seamlessly connects Crossroads to Wilson Hall -- which formerly was a vast expanse of concrete with no shade, minimal seating, and no programming.

Sized to accommodate substantial events and ceremonies, the large amphitheater hosts formal music, dance and theater acts, while the smaller ‘Green Box’ amphitheater tucked into the hillside caters to more intimate performances. Now called the Wilson Performing Arts Common, this rehabilitated Quad also creates a multitude of green gathering areas for students and staff, adding both social and ecological value to the campus. Bioswales capture runoff from paved areas, boosting vital habitat and subtly recalling the area’s agricultural history through swaths of native meadows. Two vehicular roads were converted into large-scale pedestrian promenades flanked with shade trees, improving safety for campus visitors and sending the message that spaces for people take priority over spaces for cars.
