SALT DESIGN STUDIO was contracted for the site development of the old West Philadelphia High School property. The historic Gothic building is being repurposed into a multi-family apartment building. When the school was closed in 2011, it created a large void in the neighborhood fabric. The reuse of this historic structure will revive activity within the neighborhood.
The complex site, consisting of an entire city block, had numerous site challenges, including significant grade change across the site, limited access points, and dated and crumbling infrastructure. The proposed design activates the block through a variety of unique exterior spaces intended to engage the future residents and the surrounding community. The landscape features outdoor recreation and lounge spaces, multiple at-grade and raised planters, and a pop-up coffee shop/beer garden that will be open to the public.
