SALT DESIGN STUDIO led the development of a Master Plan for the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education. The 368-acre site is home to a rich collection of natural resources and aesthetic experiences, amplified by a variety of historic structures. The focus of the planning process was distilling the image and brand the Schuylkill Center wants to present to the public, and translating that vision into a coherent and memorable landscape.
During Phase 1, several major themes for the institution emerged: environmental art in the woods, preservation of forest tranquility in tandem with restoration, and serving as a model for a sustainable building-landscape interface. Key opportunities included redesign of the Visitor Center entry drive and landscape, restoration along property edges, design of public access points for hikers and cyclists, and creation of nature playscape.
