Located in the heart of historic Independence Mall, the Independence Visitor Center serves as the central orientation hub for Philadelphia’s millions of annual tourists. SALT DESIGN STUDIO was commissioned to reimagine both the exterior and interior landscapes as part of a broader renovation and expansion effort to create a more welcoming and interactive experience for visitors.

The landscape around the building features a more resilient and welcoming plant palette suited to the site’s urban conditions. A range of hardy shrubs, perennials, vines, and bulbs were introduced for their durability and compatibility with a low-maintenance, urban-friendly design. Other site improvements include new paving, outdoor seating, and enhanced planting to seamlessly connect the original building with the new addition. Streamlined, intuitive signage and circulation upgrades were also integrated to improve wayfinding and support a smooth, enjoyable flow through the space.
