SALT DESIGN STUDIO was commissioned to design a new community pocket park and plaza as part of the revitalization of Bala Avenue. Nestled between new and existing buildings, this park creates a new public gathering space in Bala Cynwyd’s historic commercial corridor.

The new central plaza is framed by a textural diversity of perennials and shrubs and punctuated with four canopy trees, creating a garden oasis on busy Bala Avenue. The landscape creates an important visual green link between the nearby Cynwyd Heritage Trail, the Cynywd Regional Rail Train Station, and the historic Village of Bala. In addition, the plaza provides a new direct pedestrian access to retail shops from the adjacent public parking lot. Outdoor seating provides a boost for nearby cafes and shops, and helps to create a social anchor in this commercial area. The plaza hosts seasonal community events, such as the Bala Avenue Block Party and the Bala Avenue Arts Walk.
