Swarthmore College is renowned for its commitment to sustainability and is home to Scott Arboretum, which encompasses more than 300 acres and hosts an extensive, curated collection of plant species. SALT DESIGN STUDIO was commissioned to design a courtyard, path system and campus planting for Whittier Hall, a new arts and science building on campus. The courtyard garden scheme responds to the geometry of the new architecture with orthogonal bands of plants, creating an intimate and finely textured landscape for small gathering and socializing. The plant palette harmonizes beautifully with the new building materials, featuring soothing cool blues and greens, interrupted with waves of chartreuse and gold. In addition, the courtyard offers art students a new canvas for exhibition of their work.
