Mercy Family Center is a new community-based facility in North Philadelphia sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. The Center is located in a silver LEED-rated renovated warehouse. Early in the process, SALT DESIGN STUDIO participated in neighborhood charrettes with the design team to evaluate potential building uses and develop sustainable, green solutions for the landscape. SALT was commissioned to design entry gardens, a play-yard, streetscapes and stormwater management devices for the parking area. The new landscape features an ecological teaching garden with canopy trees at the Center’s main entrance, an area that formerly was paved from curb to building. New, connected tree trenches along 20th Street bring a much needed pedestrian scale and green canopy to the streetscape. At the property edge next to the parking lot, a vegetated swale retains stormwater and serves as a green buffer between the Center and the adjacent residential neighborhood.
