Greene Street Friends (GSF), a Quaker co-educational day school located in the historic Germantown section of Philadelphia, was interested in creating an environmentally friendly recreational space on their urban campus. SALT DESIGN STUDIO led a multi-disciplinary team that developed a set of overarching guidelines for long-term sustainable campus development. The team proposed ways for the school to model sustainable practices on campus with respect to water, soil, plants and structures, and prepared schematic concepts for alternative play spaces. Since GSF is located on the boundary of two watersheds, the site offers potential for both capturing water and educating students about the importance of urban stormwater management. Key strategic principles of the plan included: restoring nature in play, reintroducing fabric of native plants and habitats, managing stormwater ecologically and fostering outdoor educational opportunities.
