The Town of Davidson held a competition to design a book garden for an under-utilized space adjacent to the Davidson Public Library on Main Street. The design developed by SALT DESIGN STUDIO, in collaboration with artist Shaun Dargan Cassidy and Charlotte-based landscape architects, groundworks studio, was selected as the Second Place Winning Entry.
Inspired by the open book, the Davidson Book Garden is a metaphor for opening one’s mind to the experiences offered by the literary and natural world. Leaves are the connection between nature and the world of books. Envisioned as a place for discovery, reflection and gathering, the Garden offers an artful, textural and dynamic place for people. An elevated, curvilinear metal walkway connects four distinct outdoor rooms together arcing around an existing water oak. The rock outcrops and boulder fields recall Davidson’s agrarian traditions. The leaves offer places for rest, contemplation and socializing, not unlike the journey through a good book.
