63RD STREET COMMERCIAL CORRIDOR Philadelphia PA

SALT DESIGN STUDIO was commissioned by Overbrook Farms Club to design a streetscape treatment for a portion of the 63rd Street corridor. Adjacent to a private parking lot that is used for a weekly, outdoor farmers market in the summer, the site offered a unique opportunity to address environmental issues and boost commercial-social ventures along the corridor by creating a neighborhood ‘node’ or civic space. The design features a trio of rain gardens with native trees and grasses that capture stormwater from the parking lot and serve as an important visual anchor for 63rd Street. Locally quarried, stone walls provide seating and gathering for passersby, while the planting creates a welcoming entrance for the farmers market and minimizes the impact of asphalt on the streetscape.
